Event Description
Having trouble with that first blank page of your sketchbook? Looking for ways to make your sketching and sketchbook practice more disciplined? Or are you just looking for a way to spend some quiet time working in the pages of your book?  Join us at Teaspressa in Ann Arbor at 1pm January 13th for a little sketchbook workshop and discussion! ____ One of the most influential aspects of my career as an artist has been developing my sketchbook practice. When I make time to play in my sketchbook daily I’m a better artist, a better businesswoman, a better planner and just all around more engaged and thoughtful in my work. Everything starts in my books. From words, to color combinations, to lines and form explorations - every painting has its roots somewhere here in these pages. It may be in various forms, from completely recognizable to only a small section of the final piece - but they all get their initial, messy start here. It’s also one of the things I am most frequently asked about; with a steady stream of  “How do you start?” messages, emails and notes making their way to me. It took me years to settle into this habit; to stay loyal to one book for more than a few pages, to make something ugly and not rip the page out, to come back to it day after day. And in doing so I developed a few methods and tools to help me along the way. Limited to 15 participants, this time is set aside to tackle that first blank page, to celebrate the 20 pages we’ve filled out already, to sketch the next 4. I will share my method of sketchbook-keeping and am beyond excited to learn about yours. We’ll work on a few pages using exercises that I rely on (still-lifes, prompts, experiements ...etc.) using provided materials that are commonly found in my books. Part discussion, part workshop, we’ll create and talk, learn and grow our sketchbook practice together.
